SVED and her Background in Storytelling
Anna’s storytelling practice began in 2007 during an industry internship with the Media Resource Centre in Adelaide, where documentary filmmaker Martin Potter introduced her to the emerging practice of digital storytelling. As part of her internship, Anna worked on Journeys From Heartache to Hope and helped facilitate community storytelling workshops, discovering the power of personal storytelling as a tool for reflection, connection and change.
Inspired by this work, Anna was awarded both the Minister for Youth’s Leadership Grant and the Ruth Gibson Memorial Award to further research digital storytelling. She used these grants to complete Digital Storytelling Train the Trainer at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), learning an internationally recognised facilitation methodology based on the work of StoryCenter.
From 2008 to 2018, Anna worked with ACMI producing digital stories and biographical documentaries through facilitated workshops, guiding participants from their first conversation through to the completed film. Her work included projects with Black Saturday bushfire survivors, Victorian veterans, First Nations young people, people living with HIV and women whose achievements shaped Victoria’s history.
In 2011, Anna’s industry experience led to an invitation from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) to teach the storytelling component of its Documentary Graduate Certificate. She delivered sessions on digital and multi-platform storytelling, helping documentary filmmakers develop new ways of sharing real stories online.
At SVED, these principles continue to shape Anna’s work. She understands that people make sense of their lives through story, and that lasting change often begins by examining the stories we have inherited, the stories we tell ourselves and the stories we are ready to rewrite. The wardrobe becomes an experiential environment where those stories can be explored, challenged and expressed in ways that feel authentic to the person someone is becoming.
